The slabs weren’t as slippery as I thought they’d be, surprisingly, the lowest .8 miles or so from 73 up to the Giant Basin lake were the most slippery, with wet leaves and foot-traffic worn smooth rocks. After a few minor bumps the path descends to the outlet of Mary Louise Pond at 6.1 miles. I was happy that there was no wind, as I’ve read that this peak can get pretty gusty. Leaving the pond, the trail climbs through open meadows to the summit of Rocky Peak Ridge at 6.7 miles. It was a cloudy morning, but the views were still great. The trail went down pretty steeply. The Ridge Trail climbs quickly and steadily to Giant Mountain (4,626 feet) via the Washbowl, a small pond less than a mile from the trailhead. ... We both fell a few times during the hike, so be careful. RPR had most of the westerly views of Giant’s peak, but then also a clear line of sight in every other direction as well. From the upper reaches of this trail, there is a good look at Rocky Peak Ridge, with Lake Champlain clearly visible not to far beyond. The washbowl is a small mountain pond that collects run-off from the mountain, very scenic. Much better than the Giant Mountain trail past the falls. [2] Chumash Single Track : Description: The Chumash trail starts at the end of Flanagan Drive in eastern Simi Valley and ends at the Rocky Peak fire road about 1000 feet about it.It has a consistant, fairly steep grade to it and some rocks and ruts, with a few spots where getting off and walking is in order, whether going up or down, but there are no really loose spots..
